Back from Sochi, ‘Today’ Drops Behind ‘GMA’

TodayHomeA split decision for “Today” during its much-hyped Olympic return to Rockefeller Center following three weeks in Russia. According to Nielsen Fast National numbers, “Good Morning America” is back on top among Total Viewers while “Today” won the A25-54 demo.

“Today” was up compared to the Monday after the London Olympics by +15% in viewers and +9% in the demo. But it’s a significant win, though scant (89,000 viewer difference out of more than 11 million) for “GMA,” which had been the No. 1 morning show for 77 weeks straight heading into the two weeks of Sochi competition. On the Monday following the 2012 London Olympics “Today” topped “GMA by 301,000 Total Viewers and by 102,000 demo viewers. “Good Morning America” ended up winning the week in Total Viewers and “Today” won the week in the demo. This is the first time “GMA” has beaten “Today” among Total Viewers the Monday after the Olympics since August 10, 1992 following NBC’s coverage of the Barcelona games.
