Chris Matthews was supposed to anchor MSNBC’s coverage of the Alito hearings, but he’s been largely MIA for the first three days.
“Chris has been really ill since returning from a family trip over the holidays,” an e-mailer says. He returned to Hardball on Tuesday, but Norah O’Donnell and Dan Abrams have been leading the daytime Alito coverage.
“Chris is sick with what’s been described as an upper respiratory ailment that he came down with over the weekend,” an insider says. “He must be pretty sick to miss three days of hearings. Chris recently got back from Africa where he took a trip over the holidays. Remember that he got malaria last time he went to Africa a few years ago, so people here are concerned…”
