Ahead of Norah O’Donnell’s 60 Minutes Interview, Rep. Steve Scalise Returns to Congress

Norah O’Donnell is anchoring CBS News’s special coverage of Rep. Steve Scalise‘s emotional return to the House of Representatives.

O’Donnell got the first interview with Scalise which will air on Sunday’s 60 Minutes.

“You have no idea how great this feels to be back here at work in the people’s house,” said Scalise. “An event like this is going to change people. And the first thing I can tell you is, yes, it changed me, but not in the ways you might think. It’s only strengthened my faith in God, and it’s really crystallized what shows up as the goodness in people. While some people might focus on a tragic event and an evil act, to me, all I remember are the thousands of acts of kindness and love and warmth that came out of this.”

Scalise was shot June 14 when a gunman opened fire on a congressional baseball practice. He endured several surgeries and rehab to walk again. “A grueling, grueling recovery,” O’Donnell called it during CBS’s special report this morning.

O’Donnell will be sitting down with Scalise and his wife again today for her 60 Minutes report.

NBC News also produced a special report, anchored by Chris Jansing. The cable and streaming news networks also carried Scalise’s remarks live.
