ABC’s World News Deals “21”

By Chris Ariens

World News is taking advantage of a few extra minutes of their Monday broadcasts this month to focus on an age group that might not normally watch the evening news.

World News EP Jon Banner sent his correspondents to far-flung parts of the planet with a simple mission: see what life is like through the eyes of 21 year olds. The series “21 and the World is Yours” begins tonight with ABC’s Dan Harris reporting from from Mumbai, India. He’ll talk with 21 year-old Nisha Mehta who is “straddling two worlds — that of her professional life and the one at home with her parents.”

Banner tells TVNewser, “Our goal with this series is to expose our audience to people and places in the world they may not know much about — something we’ve aimed to do in many of our previous single sponsor broadcasts.”

In the following weeks, Bill Weir heads to Cairo, Jim Sciutto reports from Kenya and Stephanie Sy gets the lay of the land from a 21-year-old in China.

“Whether they’re from countries that are economic powerhouses or emerging democracies, these young adults have much to tell us about the future of their countries and of our world,” Banner says.

ABC has also created a Facebook page for the series. So far it has 28 fans.
