ABC News Correspondent Turned Away From Tiananmen Square

By Alex Weprin

A reporter for ABC News, Gloria Rivera, and her crew for the network were turned away from Tiananmen Square on the anniversary of the crackdown on protests there. Rivera filmed an exchange with Chinese police as they explained that because she did not have her passport and documents, she could not film there.

While reporters are supposed to have permission to film there, Rivera says that typically the rules are not strongly enforced.  It may not have been as dramatic as the Sky news reporter who was detained live on-air, but it was emblematic of the challenges facing journalists in the country.
