A Note About Jobs

By Chris Ariens

We don’t have to tell you how tough it is out there. You read about it everyday, you see it at work, maybe you’re feeling it first-hand. And today’s October jobs report puts it into perspective — the unemployment rate is at a 14-year high, more than a half million jobs lost in the last two months alone.

This blog, and others in the mediabistro.com network, have been reporting on the incredibly shrinking media for months — from newspapers and magazines to advertising agencies and book publishers, virtually no one in our community is immune.

Last night at the TVNewser party, I met a guy who’s been out of work since June. He was a reporter in a big market, and was grateful to see a listing on the mediabistro.com job board that got him an interview at a national network.

Right now there are more than 800 media jobs on the job board. It’s an eclectic mix of opportunities for media professionals from all disciplines. WNBC is looking for Content Desk Editors; HBO needs an Editorial Manager; Fox News is looking for a producer for Fox News Edge.

So while the future is uncertain and the outlook grim, we just want to let you know the mediabistro.com community is here for you — with jobs, with our great line-up of courses and keeping you informed on the blogs, reporting on these fitful times with the sensitivity it deserves.
