A Longer Nightline, A Shorter Kimmel?

Today’s NY Post says “ABC has no plans to expand ‘Nightline’ by a half-hour and move ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ to 12:35 a.m., network officials insisted yesterday.”

But I didn’t get the impression from yesterday’s Observer story that Kimmel’s time slot would move. I got the impression that ABC could shorten Kimmel or replace it alltogether.

“Were ABC to pick up the longer version, the extra time would fill the slot currently held by Jimmy Kimmel Live, the network’s underperforming answer to David Letterman and Jay Leno’s talk shows on CBS and NBC,” the story said. It also said: “Two sources said that Mr. Goldston described Mr. Kimmel’s show as losing ‘buckets of money.'”

But an ABC VP tells the Post that Kimmel’s ratings are up…
