How Is the BBC-CBS News Sharing Partnership Going?

The annual NewFronts presentations are taking place in New York this week. This is when more than a dozen digital publishers try to get advertisers interested in the content they’re producing. Among the first two presenters today, The New York Times and BBC News.

The New York Times’ presentation included a cameo from CNBC Squawk Box co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin who touted his Dealbook column that launched 17 years ago in the Times. The daily newsletter has 400,000 subscribers, “far bigger than you get with Politico and Axios,” said Sorkin.

Michael Barbaro, who hosts The New York Times podcast The Daily, which averages 1 million listeners a day, said that the fact he interviewed James Comey on the same day Comey spoke to CNN’s Jake Tapper and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, “means that we’re playing with the big boys and girls on the level with cable news.”

A few hours later, BBC anchor and MSNBC contributor Katty Kay hosted BBC News’s NewFront presentation. On tap: two new AR/VR projects, World of Wonder and World’s Kitchen, and the return of 100 Women, a BBC News series which is hosted by Kay.

Last year, BBC broke with ABC News and forged a new global news-sharing partnership with CBS News. We talked with BBC Global News CEO Jim Egan after the presentation about the partnership. “There was recently a six-month review, and everyone seems very happy with how it is working so far. They’re providing good content for us that we’re using on our English-language and our international networks,” said Egan. “I think everyone on both sides seems pleased right now.”
