Miguel Estrada, a Honduras-born, Harvard educated lawyer with ties to the Bush family, has been hired to defend Univision’s decision to drop the network’s broadcast of the Miss USA pageant in the wake of Trump’s comments on Mexican immigrants.
Trump sued Univision for $500 million dollars–and has vowed to file a similar suit against NBC, which also cut ties with Trump and the Miss USA pageant.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Estrada has longstanding ties to Jeb Bush, his brother, former President George W. Bush, and his father, former President George H. W. Bush:
It was his connections to the Bush family that helped cement his fame in the legal community.
He began working in the Justice Department and rose to Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States during the presidency of George H.W. Bush. He was part of the team that represented George W. Bush in the Bush v. Gore case, turning the fortunes of the 2000 election. And soon after Jeb Bush’s brother took office, that favor was repaid with a nomination to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.
Estrada has also represented Comcast and NBCUniversal in fights against the Federal Communications Commission over issues including net neutrality, carriage discrimination and “fleeting expletives.”
