Using social media to promote local sports

By Steve Safran

The Washington Capitals are fast becoming a lesson in how to harness the power of social media in your community. The Washington Post writes about the team’s efforts:

“The Capitals have more than 95,000 fans on Facebook and more than 11,000 followers on Twitter. Players with accounts include defenseman Mike Green, who Twitters as GreenLife52 and has more than 6,000 followers, and forward Eric Fehr, who only recently began using the social networking Web site at the suggestion of the Capitals.”

There’s an interesting strategy at play here. The NHL does not do well on television, and it never has. By reaching out to the youth audience via social media, hockey teams can attract more ticket-buyers. Unlike the other Washington pro sports teams, the Caps have been generating some excitement of late – they have won a franchise-record 14 games in a row, and are running away with the Eastern Conference.
