Twitter to sell followers in 'promoted accounts'

By Cory Bergman

Need some Twitter followers? Beginning tomorrow, you can pay for them as part of Twitter’s new promoted accounts, according to a report by AllThingsD. “Twitter will try to help corporations and brands increase their Twitter following by inserting them alongside other Twitter users it suggests in its ‘Who to Follow’ feature,” writes Peter Kafka, who explains the paid accounts will only surface as “relevant” suggestions.

Many Twitter users are familiar with the power of Twitter’s old suggested user list, which was phased out in favor of its new “Who to Follow” suggestions (which are increasingly accurate, if you ask me). Depending on how Twitter determines relevance — and pricing — these new ads could be quite popular.

“How granular will the options for placement be? It would be great if this was a Twitter advertising option that had a lower price of entry,” writes Marshall Kirkpatrick on ReadWriteWeb. For example, could a Seattle news account promote itself to Seattleites who follow other local news accounts?

Looks like we’ll find out tomorrow, when Twitter makes the announcement.
