There's no such thing as tweeting too much

By Cory Bergman

CNBC reporter Darren Rovell has published a great list of Twitter golden rules. And everyone may not agree with #9 on the list, “There’s no such thing as tweeting too much.”

“I’ve had people tell me that you can only tweet so much before people get tired with you clogging up their timeline. Not true,” he writes. “If you tweet quality, no one will stop following you. People don’t get annoyed with your number of tweets. They get annoyed with the number of your tweets that are bad.”

Of course, maintaining a consistent quality will limit frequency, sooner or later. I counted 38 tweets from @darrenrovell over the last 24 hours, most focused on his beat, sports business news. The golden child of social media, @mashable tweeted 48 times in the last 24 hours. And over at @breakingnews, where I work, we’ve been known to crack 50 or more tweets.

For Twitter users who follow a handful of people, that would certainly clog up the timeline. But as users follow more and more people — through recommendations and the inevitable additions — they’re less like to read every tweet, dipping in and out in the course of a day.

What do you think? Can you tweet too much, as long as the quality is consistent?
