Sling Media about to launch video portal

The folks behind the Slingbox are starting to show off their upcoming video portal and sharing service, sling.com. They announced it many months ago, but now they’re inviting some Slingbox users to a private beta. According to the invitation that TechCrunch has, Sling says the service will let users edit and upload short clips of TV content and then share them on the site. It will also give them access to “premium on-demand video content from 60 partners.” They also say users will be able to access their own TVs through their browsers, much like what’s already possible with the SlingPlayer.

There are other video portals out there with premium content–Hulu, Veoh, Joost, etc.–but none of them has Sling’s in-home hardware advantage. With the ability to control your existing TV, this is another step in the inevitable march toward getting all our content through the same cable and on the same screen.
