SimpleGEO launching as 'iTunes for geo-data'

By Cory Bergman

The Boulder, Colorado company SimpleGEO is debuting a set of tools to make it easy for companies to infuse their products with location-based services. And it’s getting quite a bit of buzz, largely because location isn’t easy. SimpleGEO allows you to store and retrieve data based on location, including data from other providers (like Localeze and MetaCarta) who are syndicating their content for a revenue share.

Ultimately, SimpleGEO says it will offer the ability to query a location (a point or polygon) and receive a custom list of all the data in that area, from paid partner data to free location services like Twitter and Foursquare. An “iTunes for geo-data,” explains CEO Matt Galligan. Pretty powerful stuff, and perfectly time to capitalize on the geo explosion.
