Rack sales of magazines fall 11 percent

By David Johnson

In the second half of 2008, single copy and newsstand sales of magazines dropped sharply, largely explained away as checkout lane impulse purchasing curbed due to the economic downturn. Weekly news magazines have fallen almost completely off the cliff, with major titles dropping from weekly to biweekly to monthly publishing cycles. Cosmopolitan lost 6 percent of its readersship but still stayed on top of the checkout heap. People actually gained readership. But the most telling statistic is:

AARP Bulletin and AARP The Magazine had the largest circulation overall, each at more than 24 million.

Now that is old media. Really old media.
