Phoenix stations to share chopper

By Don Day

Three Phoenix TV stations are going to share a single news helicopter — something we called for after a chopper accident in the area killed four people in 2007. Five helicopters were flying a pointless car chase the day of the accident.

The agreement puts together an outside firm that will fly stories for KPHO, KPNX and KTVK. Two pilot positions and two reporter jobs will be open – and the current employees at the stations are encouraged to apply.

Two stations will still have their own helicopters – and maybe somewhat of an advantage. But this is a positive step.
