Paramount Global Reportedly Considers Folding Showtime Into Paramount+

Could the Showtime streaming platform be coming to an end?

Paramount Global is reportedly considering ending the streaming service and moving the content to Paramount+, according to The Wall Street Journal. Discussions are still in the early stages.

“We are always exploring options to maximize the value of our content investment by giving consumers access to great Paramount content through an array of services and platforms,” a Paramount Global spokesperson told WSJ.

Smaller streaming services like Showtime are finding it more challenging to compete in an already oversaturated market where streaming juggernauts and newer entrants vie for subscribers. And in the crowded landscape, companies are seeking new ways to attract viewers.

For instance, last month, Walmart announced it would offer the Paramount+ streaming service at no extra cost to subscribers of Walmart+.

Complex talks with cable and satellite TV providers that offer the Showtime TV channel are likely ahead in order for Paramount to combine the two streaming platforms. The company has reportedly already discussed shutting down the standalone Showtime service with at least one significant pay-TV partner.

Although each of its two streaming services are still available on different apps, Paramount has already taken steps to integrate them more closely. Last month, the company started bundling the two streaming services for $7.99 per month with ads and $12.99 per month without them.

“The Paramount+ with Showtime bundle offers consumers unprecedented value by providing one of the broadest content libraries in streaming at one of the lowest prices in the marketplace,” said Tom Ryan, president and chief executive officer of Paramount global streaming, in a statement at the time. “This singular user experience streamlines sign-up and enhances discovery, and this lower price will allow more households to enjoy this exceptional combined entertainment offering.”
