NBC gets social for the Royal Wedding

By Cory Bergman

NBC News is covering the Royal Wedding wall-to-wall, and there are several interesting hooks to social media, from Twitter and Facebook to an iPad-iPhone app.

For starters, NBC plans to cover the big event on @royalwedding, a “hyperactive look at everything royal wedding,” says Ryan Osborn, NBC News’ social media director. “We’ll be posting links to our (Today.com) Windsor Knot blog and special coverage but also retweeting news from across the web.”

Twitter will also be integrated into a map inside the new Royal Wedding iPad and iPhone apps (above). “We are still working on a few features but on the day of you’ll be able to see Tweets from NBC News and citizens along the royal wedding route,” Osborn says. “We will be surfacing them through Twitter lists and the hashtag #royalwedding.” The app also features the latest news and video, as well as backgrounder information (promo video).

You can also create a “viewing party” via the app — a Facebook event — for NBC’s coverage. NBC is also partnering with GetGlue to offer virtual stickers for viewing.
