NAB: Yap.tv rolls out a sync platform for networks, producers

By Cory Bergman

We’re here in Las Vegas for the annual NAB convention, and the social TV news is coming fast and furious. Among them, Yap.tv announced this morning that it’s offering content producers and networks the ability to sync their content directly to Yap.tv’s app — for free. In other words, Yap.tv is allowing others to create second-screen experiences inside its app, powered by audio fingerprinting technology through a new partnership with Audible Magic.

Ok, here’s how it works. In advance, a network uploads a show video to Yap.tv, which is fingerprinted by Audible Magic. Using Yap.tv’s new content management system, the network can create companion videos, photos albums, interactive ads and more. Then when the show airs, Yap.tv users will see a “live pulse” button on their devices, which illustrates that synchronized companion content is available to watch.

“A number of TV networks have expressed the need for a cost-effective way to provide synchronized content for their fans,” said Trevor Stout, CEO, “But, equally as important, networks have expressed the desire to easily manage the content in those experiences, in real-time. Our yap.TV Live Pulse feature and CMS solves both.”

The new addition by Yap.tv signals how second-screen companies turning themselves into content management systems to attract more companion content and speed audience acquisition. Miso was the first, launching “Side Shows” last December. Calling itself the “WordPress” of the second screen, Miso offered content producers the ability to create companion timelines that track with the broadcasts.

Yap.tv already hosts pages for “every show on every network,” complete with algorithmically-curated social feeds and programming information. Participating networks and producers can layer content on top of it as well as modify show information, graphics, polls and social streams.

The Latino reality show Q’Viva is among the first to use the new platform in addition to launching its own standalone app using the Yap.tv platform.
