MySpace will have 100M users this fall

By Stephen Warley

After Shawn Gold, SVP of Marketing for MySpace, addressed CTAM attendees yesterday, I decided it’s high time for me to set up a profile on MySpace before I get left behind! The fastest growing segment is the 35+ crowd with over 25 million users. By this fall, MySpace is expected to have 100,000,000 registered users. Gold articulated MySpace’s long-term biz plan: 1. Understand the core needs of their users. 2. Address those core needs. 3. Facilitate on a social networking platform. That’s not just a biz plan folks, that’s how all media companies now need to organize themselves. If you don’t get MySpace, you don’t get the future of media. More fun stats from MySpace . . . .

  • 10% of Google’s traffic comes form MySpace.
  • 40% of YouTube’s traffic comes from MySpace.
  • 2 million new registrants every week.
  • Causes are important to today’s youth, on MySpace there are: 18,000 groups for government and politics; 67,000 for religion; and 11,000 for nonprofit organizations.
  • 3% of content on MySpace is professionally created.
  • There are10,000 comedian profiles on MySpace and 40,000 filmmakers.
  • Viral video was launched in January and up to 19% of all video on the Internet is viewed on MySpace. Yahoo’s share is 5% and Google’s is 3%.
  • Most successful promotion was for premier of the X-Men, 2 million people become a “friend” of the profile.

Notes from the press room: I did find it ironic that even MySpace still needs to get its business message out through newspapers and magazines (I think I was one of the only bloggers present!)
