Morris Publishing Group files Ch. 11

By Steve Safran

Morris Publishing Group, the privately held owner of 13 daily newspapers, filed for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday. Morris runs such papers as Bluffton Today, The Augusta Chronicle and the Savannah Morning News. It runs 28 nondaily papers, five shoppers’ papers, 18 city magazines and Skirt! magazine (a locally-branded women’s magazine for 14 local markets). The company will continue to do business as it works through an approved, prepackaged plan to cut overall debt from $415 million to $126.5 million. The company says customers, employees and suppliers will see “no change in our business operations,” and that the filing will save thousands of jobs.
