Julia Roberts’ Martha Mitchell Goes Toe-To-Toe with Nixon Presidency in Starz’s Gaslit Trailer

By Jessica Lerner

Insane or the only one seeing clearly? That’s one of the questions at the center of Starz’s limited series Gaslight, a modern take on Watergate that focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal.

From Nixon’s bumbling and opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down, Gaslit centers on Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts), “a big personality with an even bigger mouth.”

Starz released its first trailer today for Gaslit, which will debut Sunday, April 24 at midnight on the Starz app, all Starz streaming and on-demand platforms, and globally on the StarzPlay streaming platform.

Martha is a well-known Arkansan socialite and the wife of John Mitchell, Nixon’s devoted Attorney General (Sean Penn). Despite her political affiliations, she is the first to publicly raise concerns about Nixon’s role in Watergate, which destabilizes both the presidency and her personal life. As Attorney General, John Mitchell is Nixon’s most trusted advisor and dearest buddy, and he’ll be forced to choose between Martha and the President.

Based on the first season of the Slow Burn podcast, Gaslit also stars Dan Stevens, Betty Gilpin, Shea Whigham and Darby Camp.
