Here’s What People Watched During the Blizzard

By Karen Fratti

tian_tian_snow_zooWith most of the Mid-Atlantic region snowed in because of winter storm Jonas, it was a given that people would watch more television than normal. But people really watched a lot of TV this past week. According to Comcast, viewing of their Xfinity on Demand broke records in some of the hardest hit areas.

  • Views in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg were up 38 percent
  • Views throughout the NE, including Boston and Connecticut, were up 40 percent
  • Views in Philadelphia and New Jersey were up 50 percent
  • Views in Baltimore and DC were up 56 percent

What were people watching?

  • NBC’s Shades of Blue was the most popular cable/broadcast show this weekend
  • HBO’s Game of Thrones topped TV in the premium category, but viewers in Philly and Baltimore preferred to catch up on Showtime’s Shameless
  • Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans Go was the most watched kids show
  • Hotel Transylvania on FX was the biggest free VOD movie
  • The Intern was the most popular rental movie across the board, however, folks in D.C and Baltimore preferred to watch the Oscar-nominated The Martian.

Looks like many used the blizzard to catch up on shows they don’t normally have time for. Advertising where to find shows and making earlier seasons available ahead of a big storm is the way to go. At some point, Tian Tian the panda or Paul Ryan’s livestream just need to be mixed up.
