Globe publishes student investigation into candidate

By Steve Safran

Students taking a course in investigative journalism at Boston’s Northeastern University have had their work published in the Boston Globe, and it’s a great piece of journalism that calls into question the ethics of a candidate for state auditor.

The piece investigated candidate Suzanne Bump and it involved her claim of two primary residences, and that she received tax exemptions on both. (Read the article – it does a much better job explaining this.) In the article, Bump insisted she was following the law. However, the article prompted her to give the city of Boston about $6,000 in escrow and called for the city to investigate her claim. (Which raises the question: why would someone running for auditor need an audit herself?) Four students worked on the piece which was overseen by their professor, a former member of the Globe Spotlight investigative team.
