GetGlue rolls out a rebuilt iPhone app to encourage more TV conversations

By Cory Bergman

Last year GetGlue launched a new iPad app and website with a social program guide, activity feeds and community features. Today, they’ve bought that functionality to the iPhone. “We rebuilt it from the ground up to help you discover what to watch, connect with friends and fans while watching and keep up with all the great second screen content from your favorite shows,” GetGlue explains.

While there’s a lot of buzz around the connection between tablets and TV, phones are still the primary second screen driver. A study by Trendrr found that 60% of the second-screen activity tied to the Super Bowl was on an iPhone, compared to 4% for iPad.

While Twitter rules the day around TV conversations, GetGlue appears to occupy a distant second place compared to other second screen apps. We took an informal tour of several apps during the Super Bowl, and GetGlue appeared to be the most active. Its updated app brings activity feeds to the iPhone, which should boost community engagement even further. It includes the ability to tag GetGlue friends in your check-ins, comments and replies.

The new update also includes GetGlue’s calendar-like program guide, which lets you quickly scroll through a feed of upcoming shows — shows you like, your friends like and suggestions — to get a quick read of what’s new. You can see who’s watching and what’s trending right now, set reminders, see live sports scores, and search for favorite shows, movies or a team.
