GetGlue to move beyond the check-in with social TV guide

By Cory Bergman

GetGlue CEO Alex Iskold previewed a big update coming later this summer called GetGlue HD. “We’re in a unique position to re-imagine discovery around television,” he told attendees at the Social TV Summit, explaining that GetGlue has 3 million users and 500 million data points. For starters, when users check into a show with GetGlue HD, they’ll land on a real-time stream of conversations and content for the show, curated by your friends and other GetGlue users. Each show will have a stream, and networks can associate social media accounts with their respective shows, as well as add original content through a GetGlue tool.

But the core of the update is a re-imagined social TV guide. “It’s truly a social guide because we’re able to leverage 500M data points from our community,” Iskold said, featuring real-time recommendations “based on your tastes and what your friends like as well.” The guide is not a grid, but a calendar-like stream. “When you open this guide, you see what’s on for you tonight,” he said. “When you scroll into the future, you see upcoming shows.” Scroll more, you’ll see a calendar of big tent-pole events. Iskold said the heart of the guide is simplicity. “Everything you care about is right there in your calendar.”

Beyond a new user experience, the social guide opens up the potential for monetization — a first for GetGlue. “We’re very excited about this guide to start monetizing our business.,” Iskold said. “We think there are lots of advertising opportunities, both natively and in the stream.” He said GetGlue will be sitting down with networks and other partners in the next several weeks to start talking about these opportunities. Stay tuned, we’ll be posting more details soon…
