By Karen Fratti

cookie empireIf comedy is tragedy plus time, people are going to need a little longer to get over the Emmy nomination snubs. Usually, Emmy noms generate social buzz, but this weekend viewers to took to the web to complain about who didn’t get a nomination.

Empire didn’t make the cut for best drama, which means the legions of people tuning in and tweeting about it all season were happy to make themselves heard. Amobee Brand Intelligence monitored 600,000 online and mobile websites and social media for consumption around the Emmy nominations. Here’s what they found:

  • The shows that generated the most attention around the Emmy nominations were Game of Thrones, which was mentioned in 24 percent of all Emmy related consumption between July 16-17 and Empire, which was mentioned in 22 percent of all Emmy related digital consumption in the same time period.  Game of Thrones led all shows with 24 nominations this year, while Empire stood out for the nominations it didn’t receive. Arguably the most successful new broadcast drama since Grey’s Anatomy in 2005, Empire was snubbed for Best Drama with male lead Terrence Howard also being overlooked.
  •  Empire was nearly four times more associated with Emmy Snub between July 16-17 than any other show, with The Big Bang Theory, which wasn’t nominated for Best Comedy having 26 percent as much Emmy Snub related consumption in the same time period. Jane the Virgin had 23 percent as much Emmy Snub related consumption as Empire between July 16-17, while both The Americans and Broad City had 22 percent as much Emmy Snub related consumption as Empire in the time period. With Selma the movie being most associated to Oscar Snub between January 15-16, 2015 around that organization’s nominations being announced; there seems to be a disconnect between audience acceptance of popular entertainment made by and primarily featuring African-Americans and the Hollywood establishment’s willingness to acknowledge those successful projects.
  • Jim Parsons who had previously won four Emmys for the role of Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, was the individual actor with the most Emmys Snub related consumption between July 16-17, with Abbi Jacobson of Broad City having 92 percent as much Emmys Snub related consumption, after she voiced her displeasure over the nomination results on Twitter. Gina Rodriguez who plays the titular Jane the Virgin had 84 percent as much Emmy Snub related consumption as Parsons between July 16-17, while Andy Samberg had 75 percent as much Emmys Snub related consumption as Parsons. Samberg is hosting the Emmys and many people were shocked he wasn’t able to parley that into an acting nomination for his role on Brooklyn Nine Nine. In the same time period, Terrence Howard had 57 percent as much Emmys Snub related consumption as Parsons, for his turn in Empire.

  • If it was up to the audience, it appears Game of Thrones would take home the gold in the Outstanding Drama Series category; as it generated the most Emmys related digital consumption between July 16-17; with Mad Men generating 86 percent as much Emmys related digital consumption for it’s swan song half season. House of Cards had 78 percent as much Emmys related consumption as Game of Thrones between July 16-17, while Orange is the New Black had 65 percent as much Emmys digital consumption, and newcomer Better Call Saul had 63 percent as much Emmys related digital consumption as Game of Thrones during the two days.
  • While Jon Hamm has never won an Emmy for playing Don Draper on Mad Men, if it was up to the audience he would go out on top. Hamm was the Lead Actor In a Drama Series nominee with the most Emmys related digital consumption during July 16-17 with Bob Odenkirk of Better Call Saul getting 66 percent as much Emmys related digital consumption as Hamm and Kevin Spacey of House of Cards receiving 57 percent as much Emmys related digital consumption as Hamm in the time period.

Comedy

  • It looks like the audience is looking for Modern Family’s five year streak of winning the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy to come to an end. Transparent was the Outstanding Comedy Series nominee with the most Emmys related digital consumption between July 16-17, with Modern Family generating 79 percent as much Emmys related consumption and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt clocking 77 percent as much Emmys related digital consumption as Transparent. Parks and Recreation had 67 percent as much Emmys related consumption as Transparent around it’s final season, while Silicon Valley had 57 percent as much Emmy related digital consumption as Transparent between July 16-17.
  • If the audience had it’s way, Amy Schumer winning Outstanding Lead Actress In a Comedy Series for Inside Amy Schumer would be the biggest lock of the Emmys. Between July 16-17, she had more than two times as much Emmys related digital consumption as anyone else in the category, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Veep receiving 49 percent as much Emmys related consumption. Amy Poehler in her final year of eligibility for Parks And Recreation generated 46 percent as much Emmys related consumption as Schumer in the same time period.
