CES: TV apps unveiled by LG, Vizio

By Cory Bergman

It’s all about connected TVs and apps at CES, and the first round of announcements are out. Always we’ve said before, 3D is nice, but the race to create connected TV apps — especially when tied to mobile apps — will change the way we watch.

Today, LG said its new connected TVs will feature apps from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon and other partners — and of course, an app store where you can buy more (release). LG will also sell a little “upgrader” box so any TV can run LG apps (release).

And Vizio has unveiled new app experience for its connected TV’s and Blu-ray players, called Via Plus, as well as announcing a partnership to carry Google TV, Hulu Plus and Blockbuster. And to capitalize on the “second screen” experience, Vizio is also launching an Android phone and tablet which will tie into Via Plus apps.

Of course, the more app platforms, the bigger the headache for content distributors looking to build their own TV apps. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. We’ll keep you updated as more TV apps are announced at CES…
