Canvs Infographic: How People Reacted on Twitter to Lifetime’s ‘Whitney’

By Adam Flomenbaum

No one knows TV movies better than Lifetime, but the network has received more than its usual share of attention recently with the biopics ‘Aalyiah: The Princess of R&B,’ which premiered in November, and last week’s ‘Whitney.’ Both movies received negative reviews, but continue to be among the highest-rated and most tweeted-about broadcasts for Lifetime.

According to our analytics partners Canvs – the first completely syndicated qualitative social TV platform – 132,451 of 437,628 tweets about the show were emotional reactions. 41% of the emotional reactions included the word “love” and 21% included “good.” The show drove the most reaction during Deborah Cox’s rendition of “I Will Always Love You.”

‘Whitney’ scored Lifetime’s highest ratings in a year with 4.5 million viewers and drew significant social media volume. The film itself generated interesting Twitter conversation, but the biggest share of reactions were about director Angela Bassett rather than anything happening in front of the camera. Bassett was mentioned in nearly 30,000 reactions out of 57,222 total Tweets, accounting for 23% of all reactions about the film. In our graphic we took a look at how reactions to ‘Whitney,’ and Bassett specifically, compared with another recent Lifetime biopic, ‘Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B.’
