Apple TV+ Becomes First Streamer to Win Best Picture Oscar

Apple TV+ made Oscar history on Sunday night, becoming the first streaming service to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Of course, while the streamer’s three Oscars for CODA should have been the big news out of the 94th Academy Awards, it was overshadowed by Will Smith’s shocking slap of Chris Rock during the telecast.

Apple TV+ leapfrogged ahead of Netflix in becoming the first streaming service to win Best Picture, as CODA beat out Netflix’s The Power of the Dog for the top award. The streamer received three Oscars in all: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur, became the second deaf actor win an acting Oscar, alongside his co-star Marlee Matlin) and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Netflix wasn’t left empty-handed, however: Jane Campion did win Best Director for The Power of the Dog, giving Netflix a big Oscar victory of its own.
