If you haven’t yet watched the season three finale of “Homeland,” stop reading now or be prepared for the same shock Twitter received last night.
The show’s heroin, turned terrorist, turned CIA asset, Nicholas Brody, was killed off, hanged in Tehran after successfully killing the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
In the buildup to Brody’s ultimate end, one fan predicted how he’d be saved:
Have not watched this #Homeland in advance, but my prediction is Brody is saved by a Showtime executive who stops a bullet with his hand.

Alas, no showtime executive appeared, and Brody was hanged with Claire Danes’ Carrie tearfully watching beyond the fence. That’s when Twitter lost it:
WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. @SHO_Homeland #Homeland — rolandsmartin (@rolandsmartin) December 16, 2013
Seriously @SHO_Homeland? Not sure what to say about this season finale. Not a cliffhanger. Leaves me confused. #Homeland

Sorry #Homeland I’m done. You killed the character I was sticking around for. I’m OUT. — Ya Think?! (@MyReveww) December 16, 2013
Was that a #Homeland series finale or season finale? Because how the heck do they go on from there at all???

One fan had the kindest of praise for Brody’s portrayer, Damian Lewis, which @Homeland retweeted:
.@lewis_damian You’re a revelation. Just brilliant. #Homeland

Of course, Brody’s death makes next season a hot topic for debate, but it will also be interesting to see how the show’s second screen following increases or dwindles as fans decide whether to come back for season four.
