United Arab Emirates Passes Legislation to Encourage Reading

By Dianna Dilworth

The United Arab Emirates has passed a new initiative to encouraging literacy among its citizens.

The National Reading Law is aimed at making reading a daily habit among citizens and facilitates programs that make books more available to people. For instance, books and magazines will be exempt from distribution, printing and publishing taxes and coffee shops and shopping malls will be required to offer reading materials for customers.

The government will also set up a National Archive full of reading materials. In addition, government employees will be given time to read at work, so long as the reading material focuses on professional development. (Via MyKotori.com)
