Trump to Libel Attorneys: You’re Hired!

By Neal

Apparently, Donald Trump really, really hates TrumpNation: The Art of Being the Donald: He’s just issued a press release announcing his intention to sue Warner Books and Timothy L. O’Brien over alleged “egregiously false and malicious statements about Trump, his family, his personal life and his business dealings.” In particular, Trump seems incensed that O’Brien’s book pegs his net worth at somewhere in the $150-250 million range, not the billions the game-show host claims for himself.

“Rather than sitting back and letting false statements be published without challenge,” the release quotes Trump as saying, “I believe it is important to expose irresponsible, malicious and false reporting.” Well, a $5 billion libel suit seems a bit more extreme than his last tactic: a nasty letter to the New York Times Book Review. But some things remain the same; just as he dismissed Mark Singer, whose New Yorker profile of Trump was reprinted in Character Studies last summer, as a loser dealing with “remarkable people who are clearly outside of his realm,” the Domino’s Pizza spokesman describes O’Brien’s book as “terribly written,” and reminds people that he himself has produced five bestselling books.
