To Hell With Your Data, He Says

If you’re a member of the American Booksellers Association, you may have encountered Andrew Laties and his volunteer workshops on bookstore management, the lessons from which he’s distilled into a memoir called Rebel Bookseller. I can’t vouch for his advice, but you can sample it for yourself, as he reads a short excerpt from a section called “Those Who Cannot, Teach” for the Fall of Autumn. “Preserve me from professional industry consultants,” he declares. “If we hire experts to give us answers, we’re dead.” Which isn’t to say he hasn’t gotten anything from consultants: “I have learned to take their advice in one way. I avoid doing what they suggest.”
