The Mystery Bookstore To Close at the End of the Month

By Jason Boog

The Mystery Bookstore in Los Angeles will close its doors for good on January 31st. According to Jacket Copy, the bookstore owners emailed the news to supporters last night.

Here’s more from the bookseller: “We’ve been proud and grateful to serve you. We treasure the friendships we’ve made through the store, and hope to keep them, wherever we all scatter, as we keep reading and recommending the books we love.  Let’s make this last month count. We’ve got a full slate of events lined up, and we hope that you’ll join us for as many as possible. If you can’t, call or email to order personalized books. We have lots of recently–signed books in stock, and we’re still here and eager to help.”

Share your Mystery Bookstore memories in the comments section. Hilary Davidson summed up the closing in a tweet: “The @mysterybooks closing makes me want to hug the indie booksellers I know & then buy lots of books from them.”

Here’s a tribute from Jacket Copy: “[The Mystery Bookstore] made an effort to utilize social media, with more than 1,100 fans on Facebook, where it actively promotes its events … The Mystery Bookstore is on Broxton in the heart of Westwood, where UCLA is located. After the recent closing of the nearby Border’s, the Mystery Bookstore was the last surviving bookstore in the neighbohood, apart from the university’s own.”
