The Future Is Not Quite Now: Waiting for Gawker’s Sci-Fi Blog

1210newitz.jpgFishbowlNY has an anticipatory post on Gawker Media‘s new futurism and science fiction blog, to be edited by Annalee Newitz (left). It’s been on the verge of debuting for a while, and apparently it’s going to take a while longer yet. But a new, high-profile blog on science fiction from the creator of Bad Subjects and Techsploitation? I’m game to see how that plays out, absolutely.

In the meantime, here’s John Scalzi on the enduring legacy of Robert Heinlein, a pitch-perfect response to the recent LAT feature on the subject (which, coincidentally, featured Newitz prominently as an expert): “Quite a few authors persist in having popular books even when the author, their books, or both, are widely deemed politically or socially shaky in one way or another by the literary taste-making class, whomever they may be. Please see Ayn Rand, Tom Clancy, Orson Scott Card, Michael Crichton and roughly 75 percent of the author lineup of Baen Books as evidence of this.”
