Looking for plans this weekend? How about taking your child to a bookstore on Saturday for the sixth annual Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day?
Jenny Milchman, author of Cover of Snow, founded the annual event when her kids were little. “Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day began when my children were little and I was going to story time at bookstores nearly every week. Did all children know the pleasure of spending time in a bookstore? I wondered,” she explains on the organization’s website.
This time around, the event will extend beyond this Saturday. For the first time, Milchman is taking a group of 36 pre-K students on a field trip to their local bookstore in Johnstown, NY on Jan. 15. As part of the effort, each child will receive a book (many of these kids have never owned a book before).
If this pilot program succeeds, Milchman hopes to launch similar programs nationwide.
