Soucouyant (Arsenal) is my Featured Book of Color Pick of the Day. It is written by author, David Chariandy and a captivating story that centers around an evil spirit folklore in Caribbean culture known as Soucouyant.

In this story, the main character is a son who has abandoned his mother, only to return years later to help his mother deal with her dementia and the mysterious young woman that now occupies the house. He slowly pieces together his mother’s past before her memory is completely wiped away.

This novel was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award and is the author’s debut novel and marks what will likely be a very long and rich career as a novelist. Soucouyant has also been longlisted for the Impac Dublin Literary Award and German rights sold to Suhrkamp Verlag.
