Laura E. Williams is the author of the story behind Lauren in Slant (Milkweed), today’s Featured Book of Color Pick of the Day. Lauren is a 13 year old Korean American adoptee. Faced with the same pangs as every teenager, Lauren must also deal with her best friend’s Caucasian beauty, her father’s love of speaking Shakespearean, the loss of her mother from years before, and the nickname “Slant.” Despite her youth, Lauren has saved up over a thousand dollars in order to pay for a special eye surgery which she is positive will allow her to fit in more. After finally convincing her father to agree to the surgery, Lauren comes face to face with the truth of her mother’s death and must contend with herself and her own happiness.

Laura E. Williams is a Korean American adoptee herself, from Seoul, South Korea. She is also the author of more than thirty books and now lives in Connecticut.
