Sci-Fi Spy Epic as Lens on Writer’s Life

Graeme McMillan interviews Matt Fraction about his indie comic book, Casanova:

“I thought nobody would ever ask again or give me the opportunity to lose their money and waste their time again. So if you (I) only had once chance to write a comic book, what would you (I) write– the 9,000th Batman rip-off, or would you (I) dig a little deeper maybe? In spite of the received wisdom suggesting the direct market seeks otherwise, I wrote a book I wanted to read; I wrote a book I hadn’t seen before on the stands but had always wanted.”

As I’ve mentioned before, Fraction’s pretty awesome, and Casanova is probably the best thing he’s done to date. (Tangentially, Valerie D’Orazio wonders: Why doesn’t DC have a rising star writer like him?)
