Tim Willocks (left) poses with Sarah Crichton of Farrar, Straus & Giroux and Tom Doherty of Tor Books, the co-publishers of The Religion, the first volume in an adventure epic set during the sixteenth-century siege of Malta. “It’s not a traditional FSG book,” Crichton admitted, “but I love it.” Shortly after she won the auction for the novel, Willocks’ agent, Al Zuckerman (who hosted last night’s party in his Chelsea townhouse), told her about the interest Tor, another division of Holtzbrinck, had shown in the story, and that got her thinking about ways to collaborate with Doherty and his team. “They know where one audience is, we know where another audience is,” she explained. The co-operative effort has worked so well that the two imprints plan to team up again to boost the profile of fantasist Jonathan Carroll, which is very good news indeed!
