Later this week, biographer Donald Sturrock will reveal the dark personal story of a beloved children’s author in a new book.
The 600-page Storyteller: The Authorized Biography of Roald Dahl will explore key moments in the writer’s life, including “his terrifying experiences as a fighter pilot” and “the mental anguish caused by the death of his seven-year-old daughter.”
The Independent explored other parts of the biography: “He was an anti-Semite, a chronically unfaithful husband and a raging bully to business associates, teachers and friends. The creator of the Big Friendly Giant could easily, it seems, transform himself into a Big Unfriendly Bastard.”
Earlier in September, Penguin’s children’s imprint, Puffin released The Missing Golden Ticket and Other Splendiferous Secrets. It contains a secret ending to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a fudge recipe, and excerpts from the author’s terrible report cards. (Via Rumpus)
