Publisher Jonathan Galassi Explains the Farrar, Straus and Giroux Restructuring

In a memo issued yesterday afternoon, Farrar, Straus and Giroux publisher Jonathan Galassi delicately explored the coming changes at his house as Macmillan reorganizes after cutting 64 jobs this week.

According to the NY Observer, all of the publisher’s national accounts will now be handled by Macmillan trade sales team. FSG Director of Sales Spenser Lee will remain at that post, selling adult books to Barnes & Noble.

The memo also discussed how the newly created “unified” Macmillan children’s publishing unit that will be helmed by Dan Farley: “FSG Books for Young Readers will be reporting to Simon Boughton and Margaret Ferguson will be its associate publisher and editorial director.” In addition, Denise Cronin will lead the FSG subsidiary rights department, also handling rights for Henry Holt.

The memo hinted at more layoffs. “Unfortunately, we are also going to have to reduce staff in certain areas. It is extremely painful to lose our colleagues and friends, some of whom have been with us for a long time.”
