OR Books Launches Mischief + Mayhem Imprint

By Maryann Yin

mmimprint.JPGOR Books has launched a new imprint named Mischief + Mayhem. The writers Lisa Dierbeck, Joshua Furst, DW Gibson, Dale Peck and Choire Sicha founded Mischief + Mayhem as a publishing collective.

The organization’s website will feature a blog and a monthly web magazine entitled Wild Rag. Peck explained: “Mainstream publishers are more risk-averse than ever … Instead of courting a mass audience with formulaic, commercial books, Mischief + Mayhem will look for weird, wild voices and writers of idiosyncratic, even skewed, vision. We don’t just want the new, we want the strange, the unsettling, the scary.”

OR Books‘ unofficial motto is, “No book printed until it’s sold.” Mischief + Mayhem will follow the same business model of electronic and print-on-demand editions. The publishing house hopes this new system “avoids the enormous waste of the current publishing system.”
