Oprah Dedicates Book Club To Sir, With Love

sidney-poitier.jpgAfter much speculation, Oprah Winfrey has made her new book club selection, and it’s Oscar-winning actor Sidney Poitier‘s “spiritual autobiography,” The Measure of a Man. The book was a bestseller when it came out in 2000, and the audiobook—which Poitier narrated himself—won a Grammy for best spoken word album. Bethanne Patrick offers an early reaction: “It’s refreshing to see a memoir from a person of age, wisdom and stature getting attention instead of one from a twentysomething whose claim-to-memoir-fame involves a Brazilian and a tragic rainbow party experience in junior high.”

As the Associated Press reports, this isn’t the first time Winfrey and Poitier will have sat down for a chat. She interviewed him for O when the memoir was first published, during which she confessed that “In my more than 25 years as an interviewer, I’ve talked to hundreds of people—yet today, I’m giddy.” Reports that Winfrey also credited Poitier with teaching her right from wrong, and weak from strong, which is a lot to learn, remain unconfirmed at this time.
