Of What Import Are Brief, Nameless Prizes… to Junot Diaz?

junot-diaz-dirtypop.jpgWay to go, Junot Diaz: You’ve just become the first person to win the Pulitzer Prize and the John Sargent, Sr. First Novel Prize (along with various other baubles) for the same work, namely The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, thus validating the ambitions of every one of his generational peers who has ever thought that Galactus, Devourer of Worlds, was as valid an epigrammatic source as Derek Wolcott. Also: Probably the only Pulitzer winner to namecheck Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

Other winners in the Pulitzer’s literary categories included poets Robert Hass and Philip Schutz, Louisa May Alcott biographer John Matteson, early American historian Daniel Walker Howe, and Saul Friedlander, a historian of the Nazi’s anti-Semitism.
