The National Geographic books division has cut nine employees, including the division’s publisher.
Publisher Kevin Mulroy, photography books director Leah Bendavid-Val, and travel publishing director Symmie Newhouse were released last week, according to Publishers Marketplace. Barbara Brownell Grogan now serves as editor-in-chief for adult books.
Communications Vice President MJ Jacobsen explained in the article: “[T]he move was a painful consequence of the tough economy and evolving marketplace. The Geographic is committed to publishing strong titles and supporting them to yield books that make a difference with strong joint marketing and promotion across all our media platforms.”
