Lewis Black Takes Book Trailers Meta

By Neal

For those of us who didn’t get to see Lewis Black performing at BookExpo last weekend, here’s the latest in the series of promotional videos he’s been shooting for Riverhead for his new book, Me of Little Faith. This time around, he talks about… making a promotional film for his new book, and why you will be destroying our economy and our culture if you don’t buy it.

I find it a bit funnier than Dennis Cass‘s video about book promotion, but I finally figured out what’s been bugging me about the Black films—there’s no laugh track. No, wait, hear me out: Part of the strength of Black’s comedy, whether in stand-up or in his Daily Show segments, is the shared gleeful reaction of the audience registering his complaints against society. Just listening to him rant (and at a slightly less frenetic level, at that) without hearing anybody else laugh… for me, anyway, it takes something away from the experience. I almost want to encourage Black to try to make the production crew crack up, you know?
