Canadian songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen has died. He was 82 years old.

His family delivered the news to fans via Facebook: “We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief.”

Cohen’s career spanned six decades. After graduating from McGill University in Montreal, Cohen moved to Greece where he bought a small house and wrote poetry and two novels: The Favorite Game and Beautiful Losers. He later moved to New York and got into songwriting, and would become one of the most revered songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s. His released albums throughout his life, his most recent work, You Want it Darker, come out last month.
