Lapham Looks Back

By Neal

What to do when two magazine editors have book parties on the same night? Reluctantly skipping the fête at Three Lives for Threepenny Review’s Wendy Lesser and The Pagoda in the Garden, I dropped in at the Accompanied Library, where Harper’s chieftain Lewis Lapham stood at the front of a packed room and delivered an executive summary of With the Beatles, an expansion of his original reporting from 1968 on the Fab Four’s pilgrimage to India to study transcedental meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. While I was there, oohing at the great job Melville House’s designer had done with the opening photo spread, I kidded publisher Dennis Loy Johnson about the prolonged silence at his publishing news website, Moby Lives, but other Melville staffers assured me the site would return soon, with more features than ever before. Just what we need—more competition!
